Square Roots Collective is a social impact venture igniting systemic change in the communities of Southern Chester County. Our work builds local businesses as a force for good and supports non-profit initiatives so everyone can thrive in our region.

We have a unique approach to tackling a complex problem: We build, operate, and invest in local businesses and non-profits as a means to catalyzing systemic change.
While non-profits are typically understood as a force for good, our local businesses are, too. They vitalize the community through professional opportunities and inclusive programming while directing profits to support our non-profits and other regional organizations and improvements.
We’re able to do this because we’re a 501(c)(4) organization, a type of non-profit that allows us to promote the common good and general welfare of society. That means all our profits can support good causes and help us contribute to a community that intentionally works together to help achieve systemic change.
How We Work
Why Kennett?
Some call it the Mushroom Capital of the world. Others know it for the beautiful Longwood Gardens. For us, Kennett Square is home.
Our small town contains a wealth of diversity across ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic circumstances. Because of this, it can sometimes feel divided along those lines, and it doesn’t need to be.
Our work aims to help our neighbors near and far in Southern Chester County build a region where this diversity can thrive and everyone who wants to live and participate in the community is able to, together.
Our History
Founded in 2019, the story of Square Roots Collective starts much earlier, in 1991, with a man named Michael Bontrager.
Mike, as everyone calls him, is the son of a Mennonite minister who moved from nearby Lancaster County to Illinois when the time came for college, and eventually joined the finance industry—but not in the traditional sense.
After working on Wall Street and realizing the status quo was to do what was best for the bank’s bottom line instead of the client’s, Mike had a vision of doing business differently. He imagined a company where transparency was baked into the culture and where trust maximization, not profit maximization, was the ultimate goal.
So in 1991, he moved his wife and daughters from New York City to Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, to start his new venture in their garage. In time, Chatham Financial became a beacon for doing business differently and made trust with clients its operating ethos.
Mike’s knack for entrepreneurship partnered with his guiding belief that there’s always a way to change the status quo and his deep love for Kennett Square formed the foundation for Square Roots Collective.
Today our organization builds local businesses as a force for good by creating community togetherness and economic sustainability to fund important non-profit work in Southern Chester County. It might sound lofty, but we have a big vision: that the communities in our region work together intentionally to help everyone have the opportunity to thrive.
