Birch Street Ribbon Cutting - June 11

In partnership with Kennett Trails Alliance, the Borough of Kennett Square, and Birch Street businesses, Square Roots Collective invites the community to celebrate a more accessible and beautiful Birch Street! (Learn more at the KTA website)

This Project was financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority, and additionally by the County of Chester Landscapes 21st Century Fund Community Revitalization Program. Thank you to Senator John Kane, Representative Christina Sappey, the Chester County Commissioners, and the Borough of Kennett Square for their support and assistance! It was a collaboration between private and municipal entities that include Pennoni Associates, Jurich, Inc., Green Roots Design Firm, Unknown Studio, the Commonwealth Finance Authority, and the County of Chester Landscapes 21st Century Fund Community Revitalization Program.

At the completion of this project, we’ll enjoy:

Pedestrian and bike-friendly infrastructure

  • New and continuous ADA sidewalks on both sides of the road

  • Completion of the Birch Street segment of the Kennett Greenway, resulting in over 2 miles of continuous trail from the Kennett Outdoor Pool to KAU Fields in Anson B. Nixon Park. The Greenway will eventually connect residents and visitors to over 14 miles of trails, 1000+ acres of open space and 10+ parks and preserves.

  • Additional raised crosswalks installed near Braeloch Brewing and The Creamery

Infrastructure

  • New stormwater infrastructure, helping to alleviate roadway flooding

  • New underground sewer infrastructure

Road design

  • Traffic calming street design, including curb bump-outs

  • Removal of the high road crown

  • New road surface

  • New driveway aprons for all residences and businesses

Beautification and environmental improvements

  • New lighting that is both pedestrian and environmentally friendly

  • New native street trees, perennial plants and grasses
